Introduction
History is the study of past events and their ripples through time. It's an academic discipline which seeks to understand the past, and how the present came to be.
The purpose of the study of history is to understand the nature of our world, especially in relation to ourselves as a species. Every action elicits a reaction, and those reactions always cause more. That is the essence of history; everything that has ever happened, and because of it, everything that will ever be. While this field can sometimes take note of scientific insights, its focus lies far from the realm of theory and observation.
The study of history is itself quite powerful, as it can make plain patterns of behavior that would otherwise go unnoticed, and give us an insight into not just where we are now and where we came from, but the way we as individuals, and a wider interconnected society, interact with the world around us. An understanding of the past can allow us to understand ourselves and predict large facets of the future with a certainty almost unthinkable in our every day lives.
As mentioned before, the power that comes with an understanding of history is the ability to understand the effects of current events in the long run, even as they develop over time. History is made every second that goes by, and our ability to make wise choices is direclty influenced by our understanding of how similar choices have affected things in the past. Often times, the challenges we face now in our day were faced by the generations that came before us.
A mainstay staple of tyrants is their proclivity to rewrite the books, as they say. By controlling the information about history, ill-intentioned inarticleiduals can blindside entire generations, countries, and cultures, leading them down terrible paths and stripping away their freedom. For this reason, history is one of the most important academic disciplines in the world, and without it, we as people are blind to what comes our way.
While we may always disagree with political opinions held by others, or the philisophical views they share, history allows us to find a common ground when trying to approach our future. History isn't affected by what you believe, and that means we can all look to it for perhaps the most unbiased voice of progress, reason, and warning we will ever have. Remember, only by understanding our past can you put the present into picture.
