Introduction

What is philosophy? To put it simply, philosophy is the study of fundamental truth. It is a method of looking out at the universe and determining the often unintuitive, obscure, and perplexing; things like ethics, morality, meaning, and the realities of existence.

These concepts are by their nature very difficult to pin down in a way that is widely accepted, because they are ultimately concepts. Unlike the laws that govern the physical world such as gravity, thermodynamics, or time, philisophy is not bound by anything inherently measureable. Philosophy challenges the indeterminate nature of our own bias and perspectives and seeks to find universal truths.

This field of thought is generally broken down into four main areas of study: Metaphysics, Logic, Ethics, and Aesthetics, and reaches conclusions through rigorous debate and discussion. Even though it is widely studied, it is arguably the least legitimate academic field, and its push for self-reflection, intellectual revision, and moral review may be more important than the problems it seeks to answer.

Obviously, there is an undeniable gap between science and philosophy, as one governs facts and the other governs thought. There can occassionally be conflicts between the two fields of study, but they ultimately have little intersection. Additionally, while the universal truths that can be gleaned by it are undoubtedly subjective to some degree, there is a reason why various ideas have persisted throughout history. Philosophy is not as hand-wavy as it may first appear to seem; certainly, it's more accurate to say that it's points, or the positions of its professors, are hotly contested, leading to a false perception of fluidity or indeterminability.
